Review: Margaret Cho captivates Gramercy Theatre, films Showtime special (Includes first-hand account)

This Gramercy show was filmed for her Showtime special which will premiere on September 25 in advance of her U.S. and European tours of “Psycho,” which kick off on October 1.

She paid tribute to the late comics Robin Williams and Joan Rivers, both of which were huge influences in her life. Cho stressed William’s philanthropy and that served as an inspiration to Cho to help out the homeless people.

Cho poked fun at such public figures as Howard Stern who delivered the eulogy at Rivers’ funeral, as well as John Travolta (and the massages he received from men), Bruce Jenner and his recent gender change, Kim Kardashian (and her behind), among others.

She managed yet again to make fun of her own mother, which is the norm in her comedic shows, and she opened up to the audience about her sexual orientation and how she is a fighter for equal rights.

Cho shared that she has been friends with fellow comedian Kathy Griffin for 27 years and she discussed their experience of wanting to board a private plane together, only to find out that it would cost $50,000. Instead, Cho chose the $50 ticket at Southwest Airlines.

The theme of her show was conveyed throughout, and she nailed it! “There’s no ‘I’ in Team, but there is a ‘Cho’ in Psycho.”

Cho concluded her comedic set with a well-received rock vocal performance, as she was backed by a full band. Most impressive about Cho is that she is a gifted singer-songwriter, on top of her many other talents such as acting, fashion and comedy. She garnered a standing ovation for her dynamic vocal performance and a roaring applause from fans.

The Verdict

Overall, Margaret Cho was hilarious at Gramercy Theatre in New York. Her comedic script may have been a little dirty at times, but the lines were clever and well-written. Her facial expressions and mannerisms were priceless, especially the moments when she imitated her mother. She proved to still be at the top of her game and a true comedic queen. Cho earned an A rating for a fun and entertaining performance.
