Review: ‘Isuca’ EP 1 gives a new spin on the supernatural genre

The first episode of Isuca, titled “Chance Meeting,” is currently streaming on Crunchyroll for all premium members. Free members can watch this episode a little less than seven days from now. It is the premiere episode of the anime adaptation of Osamu Takahashi’s ongoing manga of the same name.

I was surprised at the beginning scene with the mysterious redhead woman wearing nothing underneath her coat because I still couldn’t get over the humor of episode three of The Testament of Sister New Devil.

But, I wasn’t surprised that the mysterious redhead was a monster in disguise.

Let this be a lesson that if you see an attractive woman undress in the middle of the night, it is too good to be true. This should be a reminder to never go to secluded areas alone let alone at night. It reminds me of the latest episode to the anime Yurikuma Arashi, which currently streams on FUNimation.

I didn’t expect things to progress that fast in the first episode.

For some reason I have the feeling that Asano has a weakness for females in distress, where he rescues one only to find out that she is a two-tailed nekomata in disguise.

The next scene, where Asano and Sakuya formally meet, was golden. I have to say that this is one point scored for gender equality. This is perhaps the funniest scene in this episode.

I didn’t expect a fight against a rare and powerful beast to happen in the first episode either, but it perfectly triggered the plot that drives the story of Isuca.

Episode one of Isuca was interesting to watch and I feel this has potential. Sakuya reminds me of Saya Kisaragi from Blood-C because she is tasked with a special job of defeating ancient spectral beasts. I would go as far as to call Sakuya a version of Saya Kisaragi that uses a long bow.

The relationship between the two reminds me of Beyond the Boundary and Absolute Duo, with the latter currently streaming in North America on FUNimation.

Supernatural stories are beyond done to death, but I’m willing to give Isuca a chance.
