‘In the Blood’ follows one woman’s violent mission to find her husband after he goes missing during their honeymoon in the Caribbean.
This story has been told dozens of times on screen. Someone's loved one goes missing under suspicious circumstances and they proceed to do everything necessary to find out the truth and hopefully rescue them. However it has not been convincingly told through the actions of a female protagonist until now. In the Blood tells the story of newlyweds separated in the Caribbean and the bride’s fight to get him back.
When Ava (Gina Carano) and Derek (Cam Gigandet) got married, she had no family to give their blessing and he had several members more than willing to voice their disapproval. Both recovering addicts, they understood each other more than people could ever know. The fact that Derek didn't know everything about Ava's past never worried him. Their honeymoon is blissful with the exception of a brawl with a local gang, in which Ava defends their honour. But when Derek is taken to the hospital after a zip lining accident, Ava cannot find a record of him anywhere. When she becomes the no. 1 suspect in his disappearance, she takes the search into her own hands. Using the survival skills taught to her by her father, Ava will stop at nothing to get her husband back.
One of the great things about casting Carano in this role is she is believable. As a former mixed martial arts fighter turned actress, she doesn't need to pretend to know what she's doing in a fight because she actually does. There's nothing elegant or uncertain in her movements. When she throws down, it looks as real as it's going to get. Incorporating an untraditional upbringing by her father into the narrative is an adequate explanation for her knowledge and attitude when pushed against the wall.
Other than featuring a female protagonist, the story itself does not differ from those in the genre that preceded it. After exhausting traditional resources, Ava launches an independent investigation using whatever tactics get results. She doesn't hesitate to threaten, beat or kill anyone who may know something or stands in her way of finding answers. Beginning with the last person who saw the couple together, she forcefully extracts the next clue from each new lead until finally reaching the top of the ladder. The truth she finally reaches is satisfyingly unexpected, giving this movie one more tick in the plus column. In addition, the title takes on an unforeseen dual meaning.
Though the men – including Gigandet, Danny Trejo, Luis Guzmán, Amaury Nolasco and Treat Williams – play an instrumental role in the narrative, this is undoubtedly Carano’s film.
