article imageReview: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ preview promises galactic fun (video) Special

In anticipation of the worldwide release ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ Marvel gave fans a free sneak peek of almost 20 minutes of IMAX 3D footage.
Guardians of the Galaxy is one of this summer’s most anticipated blockbusters. The latest Marvel vehicle has provided brief introductions to its superheroes via the first trailer, but last night fans were treated to a 17-minute preview of the film – and it more than lived up to expectations.
The movie has a Raiders of the Lost Ark or Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back feel (even making reference to the former). And while it may not match either picture’s calibre, it promises to be highly entertaining once the full feature is released in theatres August 1. As most films to emerge from the Marvel universe, the movie combines fast-paced action with off-the-cuff-style humour and entrancing characters.
The sneak peek begins with an extended version of the prison lineup included in the first trailer, providing additional details about the characters – particularly Gamora (Zoe Saldana). It’s revealed she’s the daughter of Thanos (Josh Brolin) and was loaned along with her sister Nebula (Karen Gillan) to Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). Her reputation precedes her when the group is introduced to the rest of the Kyln’s prison population, most of which would kill her given the opportunity. But she’s survived this long for a reason.
Much like Game of Thrones’ Hodor, Vin Diesel’s Groot has a limited vocabulary. As Rocket (Bradley Cooper) explains, it’s restricted to “I,” “am” and “Groot” – “exclusively in that order.” Nonetheless Groot proves to be a key member of the team, defending Quill (Chris Pratt) as another inmate attempts to claim him as new meat and pairing with Rocket to make a lethal combination during the prison break that comprises the second half of the preview.

“Ain’t no thing like me, except me,” claims Rocket. He’s definitely unique and the obvious brains of the group as he devises an escape plan with jobs for everyone within minutes of entering the prison. His timeline is thrown off a bit by Groot who tries to take some initiative, but Rocket deftly improvises. Most importantly, he doesn’t sound anything like the Cooper with which moviegoers are familiar.
Pratt appears perfectly cast as Quill. He’s got the smart aleck attitude that is reminiscent of Harrison Ford’s Hans Solo or Nathan Fillion’s Malcolm Reynolds, but also a vulnerability that is shown later as the promotion provides a taste of what audiences can expect from the rest of the film.
There is a lot of laughter tucked into that first 17 minutes, but it’s balanced by some hard-hitting action as the future guardians shoot and fight their way out of maximum security. It’s during the breakout that they are joined by Drax (Dave Bautista), who makes a deal with Quill to contribute his brute strength in exchange for a face-to-face with Thanos. Gamora’s agility and tactical skills are impressive, while Groot proves a formidable force as they are confronted with well-armed guards and drones.
Still, Drax is the only element that remains in limbo. Apparently his people are very articulate and take everything literally, causing him to take offense when Quill refers to him as a “thesaurus.” It’s difficult to judge if Bautista will pull this role off, but the mystery will be solved soon enough.
Finally, the awesome, almost out of place, old school soundtrack is so far revealed to include “Spirit in the Sky,” “Hooked on a Feeling” and “Cherry Bomb.” What else does writer/director James Gunn have up his sleeve? If you can’t wait to find out, watch the newest trailer released today below.
