Review: ‘GARO — The Animation’ EP 19 portrays Ema in a human light

Episode 19 of GARO: The Animation, titled “Tempest,” is currently streaming on FUNimation for paid members. Free members can watch this same episode seven days from now on February 27th.

It is obvious that Leon and Alfonso are royally p—sed at the recent revelation that Herman, Leon’s father, has been instructed to assist Mendoza. The WTF expression on both their faces is more than understandable because of the pain and suffering Mendoza has inflicted on people let alone the Makai Knights.

Mendoza had Leon’s mother burned at the stake and caused the people of Valiante to live in oppression.

I can understand Alfonso’s anger after all that hard work he did to seemingly “kill” Mendoza at the end of episode 12.

Ema is obviously the start of this episode as “Tempest” centers on her main adventure coming to a close as she finally locates Luciano. The fight is interesting to watch and I was wowed by Ema because her flexibility and agility.

It makes me have perverted thoughts about Ema, which part of my brain wishes to have her “educate” Leon on sexual education.

Leon had to show up and “ruin” Ema’s chance at killing Luciano.

The fact that Ema is willing to offer her body if Leon wishes for crucial information does not surprise me. There was the implication early on in the series that Ema might be willing to “make a man” out of Leon.

I was shocked that Ema revealed that she was once married and Luciano is her husband that got turned into a Horror.

When I watched Ema’s flashback scenes, I felt that Luciano Guzman reminded me of Bernardo Dion as the latter submitted to Mendoza. The two of them are examples of good people that cared for the well-being of others only to be “fallen heroes” and corrupted by darkness.

Luciano’s guilt and grief of not being able to turn Horrors back into humans just got to him.

Watching Ema be imprisoned by the Makai Knights made me understand the reason she distrusts them, which makes me more sympathetic towards her. I was wondering why Ema distrusted the Makai Knights when she met Leon and Herman.

I was finally glad to see Ema actually fight, but I did not expect the fight to be something out of a fighter jet movie. This is an original twist and I liked watching that fight play out. Luciano reminded me of Griffith from Berserk before he allowed himself to be corrupted into Femto.

I was happy to see Ema defeat Luciano on her own without any help from Leon.

If you are a feminist, then you should like Ema if you can look past her personality. I found it funny to see Ema act like Herman when she’s drunk. When I look at Herman, I think Ema could pass as his sister in terms of personality and love for alcohol.

The ending took me by surprise and it had me laughing.

This episode was enjoyable and I wonder if Leon and Ema will keep the “night” a secret. I can only imagine what Herman would think if he found out that Ema “robbed the cradle” or what Alfonso would react if he learned of the news.
