Episode 4 of Durarara!! x 2, “When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do,” is currently streaming on Crunchyroll for premium members. Free members can watch this same episode roughly less than seven days from now on February 7th.
Everything ultimately centers on the 10-billion-yen bounty on Celty Sturlesson and the citywide manhunt for the mysterious serial killer “Hollywood,” who is revealed to be pop idol Ruri Hajibe. It is also revealed that Ruri has similar superhuman physical abilities to Celty as they could be potentially connected to each other.
Keep in mind that Durarara!! takes place in the same story universe as Baccano! Celty has crossed paths with Ronny Sukiart, the mysterious demon from Baccano! that granted the elixir of immortality to the principal characters.
The episode starts with Celty doing one of her usual delivery runs, but her cargo has a body stashed inside, which surprises and slightly freaks her out. I am amazed that Celty is one of the few normal and sane characters in the series even though she isn’t human.
It makes me think that Celty would be the most normal and down-to-earth person if she was ever cast in a reality TV series. I can imagine the humor that would arise from the confessional if Celty was to speak out on her fellow cast mates.
The first series focused on recovering Celty’s head, which is currently under Izaya Orihara’s ownership, and the second series focuses on the bounty on her “head.” It causes problems for everybody including Mikado and Anri, who are confronted by former members of Masaomi’s Yellow Scarves gang.
I like how this connects with the previous episode as the group is being chased by the Yellow Scarves and a random biker gang.
Walker’s reference to A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun put a smile on my face. I also loved the subtle reference to The Irregular At Magic High School.
The first half of the episode was pure adrenaline-pumping action, which resulted in Celty having a hand-to-hand fight with the bikers. It got interesting when Celty summoned “mysterious friends” to assist her.
I laughed when Celty gave the friends “valuable advice.” I laughed at the sheer irony of the situation.
I was shocked that it was Egor that was one of the mysterious friends as he was the one that needed emergency plastic surgery from Shinra, who seemingly was beaten up by Shizuo. I was surprised that he became the personal servant to Izaya’s younger sisters. The fact that Ruri was the other friend that helped fight the bikers shocked me even more.
It was “too little, too late” for Celty to give them that advice.
But I was more surprised that everything went “full circle” because Celty and Shinra were paid with Celty’s own money. The money that Celty lost during the chase by the police ended in the sisters’ hands, which 200,000 yen of that money was paid for Egor’s surgery and the rest was used to pay Celty to transport Egor to the point that he assisted in fighting the bikers.
I could feel the love near the end when they have a hotpot party.
This episode was very enjoyable to watch as friendship was the ultimate core of the story and I am glad to see Izaya planning something big to drag everybody inside. At the same time, a new war is about to be sparked between the Dollars and the Yellow Scarves.
