Episode three of Durarara!! x 2, titled “Adding Insult To Injury,” is currently available on Crunchyroll for all paid members. Free members can watch the same episode seven days from now. It is one of those “typical” days in the Ikebukuro District. It is safe to say that Durarara!! x 2 is starting slow by introducing new characters like Izaya Orihara’s twin siblings, who are in their first year at Raira Academy.
This is the same Raira Academy that Mikado, Masaomi, and Anri currently attend as second year students.
“Adding Insult To Injury” wastes no time revealing that female idol Ruri Hijiribe moonlights as the masked serial killer “Hollywood.” It is doubtful that anybody else knows it, which is why Shinra agreed to treat her.
One of these days I think Shinra’s blind fascination will kill him because it might happen when Celty’s not around to protect him. He currently knows the person as Ruri and not the elusive “Hollywood” serial killer.
I was surprised that Ruri started off as a popular movie and special effects artist before transitioning into being a famous pop singer, which is a unique concept. There is no story where a pop idol started off working in a very serious career, even though being a pop idol is a serious job.
It reminds me of the recent episode of Shonen Hollywood 50, which currently streams on FUNimation.
It shocked, but didn’t surprise me that Kasuka calmly asked Ruri if she was the elusive masked murderer.
I laughed when Shinra nonchalantly charged the Moscow Sushi restaurant 200,000 yen and refused to give a discount because they interrupted his “moment of bliss” with Ruri Hijiribe. Shinra looked cool by acting casual and normal.
I also liked that Orihara’s sisters were part of the background as casual customers.
This episode surprised me because it ran parallel to episode two, which focused on Celty and the Orihara sisters. It is apparent that Mairu wanted to be in a relationship with Kasuka, but had her dream “shattered” when a picture of him and Ruri popped up.
I was shocked by the incestuous kiss between Mairu and her twin-sister Kururi that happened after.
I was surprised by the homage to A Clockwork Orange that happened next.
Durarara!! X 2 is going in an interesting direction where every few episodes will tell the same story, but from different vantage points. It was interesting to see what other people are doing at the same time, but it can get confusing if you cannot keep up.
This episode makes it apparent that the main story will focus on the bounty placed on Celty and the hunt for the elusive “Hollywood.” I have a feeling that the next episode will focus on Mikado, Celty, and the Orihara sisters as the preview shows.
It seems that Ruri and Kasuka were made for each other as they reveal their true personalities in public, which differ from their public personalities.
