Review: ‘Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE!’ EP 2 is all about chopsticks

Episode two of Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE!, titled “Love Means Never Feeling Regret,” starts off with the Conquest Club receiving orders Thunder, who is a green alien hedgehog.

It is apparent that the Conquest Club does not deem the Earth Defense Club as a legitimate threat. You can go as far as to call the Conquest Club members a bunch of d—chebags and elitist a—holes. They are the condescending people that think they can judge.

I know the anime series is poking fun at the magical girl genre, but I have fantasizes of smacking the Conquest Club members across the face with a spinning hook kick or a tornado roundhouse kick.

Then it goes back to the Earth Defense Club members, who do neither constructive nor productive things in their club room. These people slack off and talk about random pointless stuff like talking about forests getting cut down to make chopsticks.

The conversation gets funnier when they argue the difference between menma and chopsticks, with respect to the two of them being a form of bamboo.

I love how one pointless conversation becomes another pointless conversation. This is one of the reasons I find Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! tinteresting to watch. It is funny to watch people get into heated debates on topics that are beyond trivial.

The scene gets funnier even more when Wombat chastises them for calling the group “Love Busters” when it’s “Battle Lovers” Yufuin’s apathetic and nonchalant response was funny and on point, which I completely agree.

At least Yufuin openly admits that both names are stupid. I was surprised, but humored, when the conversation turned subtly political. Wombat is a wombat-like alien, which the club members debate on the difference between an “alien” and a “foreigner.”

The humor gets off the wall when Wombat’s host body, the members’ homeroom teacher, is actually a corpse. I laughed when they were quick to call Wombat a murderer, but was surprised when Yumoto nonchalantly checked to see if the body was actually alive.

It was funny when none of them freaked out and instead had an “intellectual” conversation. Ryu’s response to Wombat was funny because it made sense. Wombat claims to love Earth, but he technically “killed” their teacher to possess his body.

The irony behind the teacher’s death made me laugh hard. Who’d expect that Wombat, who was running from Yumoto, would accidentally cause their teacher to trip and accidentally kill himself? I’m being rhetorical of course.

I laughed when Wombat tried getting out of taking all the responsibility.

The second half got interesting when the individual conversations by the Earth Defense and Conquest Clubs would foreshadow the “villain of the weak,” who is a student that loves order and gets angry at not being able to break chopsticks apart properly.

I laughed when the student transformed into a chopstick monster with the power to cause chaos and anarchy.
