article imageProducers nominate 'Nightcrawler'; leave out 'Unbroken,' 'Selma'

By Tim O'Brien     Jan 5, 2015 in Entertainment
Los Angeles - The money people have spoken with their nominations for the best in movies for 2014. They also have TV, but this story is all the movies.
Two glaring omissions are that for "Selma" and "Unbroken." In are Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper, both among those listed as producers for "American Sniper."
Some may say "Into the Woods" may be a snub, but not really. One could wonder why a "Guardians of the Galaxy" or even a "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is not included. A blockbuster comic book hero movie takes many producers with deep pockets to bring it to the big screen. With "Guardians," it was a risk, too, that paid off.
This may throw a twist on the way to the Oscars nominations as Angelina Jolie fell short here with "Unbroken" and these are the people who produce the movies - a major deal. In the end, that is much more important than a Golden Globe nomination or win.
If the DGA (Directors Guild of America) ignore her, the odds would fall off even more. From these, it looks like "Nightcrawler" and "Whiplash" gain ground. Also, "Gone Girl" gets back in the discussion. It started off award season on a high note, then fell off.
The guild's mission statement is: "The PGA represents, protects and promotes the interests of all members of the producing team.” It has over 6,500 members, which is more than the current Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscars).
One interesting note that "Citizenfour" is not among the finalists for documentary, but "Life Itself" is and could be the front-runner. Hollywood respected Roger Ebert a great deal and "Life Itself" is all about him and Hollywood.
