Op-Ed: Movies to see this summer in theatres

Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1)

What better way to kick off the summer season than one of the biggest superhero movies in years? After the huge financial success of the original Avengers movie, Joss Whedon and co. hope to up the ante. Joining Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye are Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Vision and of course Ultron, the film’s antagonist. The numerous trailers show things looking grim for our heroes, especially when Iron Man takes on the Hulk in his “Hulkbuster” armour.

Mad Max: Fury Road (May 15)

One of many franchises coming back to life this year, this movie will be the first Mad Max entry in three decades, with Tom Hardy taking on the role of Max. Trailers so far show the action will be amped up to approximately 1,000 on a scale of one to 10, and it’s sure to be a visual treat that makes Fast and the Furious car stunts look tame.

Tomorrowland (May 22)

Though the film is coming out in a month, we still don’t know a whole lot about this, but that’s what makes it so exciting. Directed by Brad Bird (The Incredibles) and written by Damon Lindelof (Lost), the film follows a young woman (Britt Robertson) and an inventor (George Clooney) heading into an alternate world (or maybe the future?). Expect mystery and lots of cool futuristic weaponry.

Jurassic World (June 12)

Chris Pratt continues his stint as action-movie protagonist with the latest Jurassic Park movie. Years later, it seems the world still hasn’t learned that opening a park with live dinosaurs is a terrible idea, and the movie will see the debut of a new, terrifying dino — the Indominus rex.

Inside Out (June 19)

The first Pixar movie in two years (and the first original in three) follows a young girl whose life is uprooted. As her settings change, her emotions (voiced by Amy Poehler and Bill Hader, among others) try to keep everything in order. Pixar always finds a way to tell resonant and personal stories, and this one is sure to tug at the heartstrings.

Terminator Genisys (July 1)

The latest Terminator movie will be both a reboot and sequel, with Jason Clarke taking on the role of John Connor and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Sarah Connor. Die-hards will also be pleased to see the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator. Expect lots more time travel shenanigans as Skynet attempts to take down John Connor once and for all, with an attack from both the past and future.

Ant-Man (July 17)

The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe follows Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), a thief tasked with stealing Hank Pym’s technology from Darren Cross (Corey Stoll). The film seems to be a contrast to the more grim Avengers movie that will precede it, and the action will be bite-sized — who needs full-sized enemies when Thomas the Tank Engine can be a threat?

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (July 31)

Ethan Hunt continues his work in the fifth Mission Impossible entry, This time, he’s being hunted by the seemingly untraceable Syndicate, and he and his team will face their toughest mission yet.

Fantastic Four (August 7)

The series gets a reboot eight years after Rise of the Silver Surfer, and what makes this new attempt unique is its insistence on presenting the tale of Reed Richards, Susan and Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm as a sci-fi story, not an action movie. The first trailer turned a lot of skepticism into anticipation, and the most recent glimpse shows the heroes’ powers in action, as well as a look at the team’s biggest enemy, Doctor Doom.

Straight Outta Compton (August 14)

Though not a typical blockbuster, this biopic certainly will have the best soundtrack of the summer. The film chronicles the historic rap group N.W.A. and will be filled with violence, drama and of course, excellent music.
