article imageNew Zealand musician Lorde admits to being dumpster diver

By Nicole Weddington     Dec 15, 2014 in Entertainment
At 18, the New Zealand phenomenon Lorde is famous for many things. She is a Grammy winner and platinum selling artist, but she has always managed to stay grounded and her latest revelation will assure that she stays there for a long time.
Lorde likes dumpster diving. She said “See, I’m boring because my favorite thing to do is trawl the inorganics.” Inorganics is a reference to New Zealand’s recycling program. Furniture, appliances, clothes and rubbish is taken to a landfill and the public is allowed to sift through them and take what they like.
“It stays on the street for a few days and then it’s collected and put into a landfill somewhere,” she explained. “But people drive around and go through other people's household rubbish. And, honestly, I’ve gotten amazing furniture, shoes, hats, jackets… I did this three weeks ago! recognized every single time. [It's] so embarrassing.”
Dumpster diving, often in dumpster from rental companies, isn’t the only way that the musician goes against the accepted image of young, successful entertainers. She rarely appears on the red carpet and has little patience for the celebrity culture. Lorde has made headlines for her lifestyle before.
She has created a different persona than many of her contemporaries. It has less of an emphasis on the superficial trappings of wealth and fame. Her music reflects the strong influences of her parents and her youth in in New Zealand.
Just because she rejects the fashion and lifestyle that has become associated with her peers, doesn’t mean that she rejects them.
“The stuff that I feel comfortable in, and beautiful and cool and strong in, is different to what this pop star or this indie musician feels comfortable in," Lorde said. "I put on a suit and I'm like, 'I'm a badass!' And that to me is my daring. But if it happened to be a bra and undies that made me feel that way, why deny yourself that? In a world that is trying to tell women all the time that you can't have something that you want for whatever reason.”
