article imageNew Scorsese project brings big names to corporate film

Although it sounds like the lineup for a new blockbuster movie, Martin Scorsese is directing Robert De Niro, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in a corporate short film to promote a new resort in Macau, a Special Administrative Region of China.
This is the first time the three actors have worked together with Scorsese on the same film. This corporate video is being made to promote Studio City and will debut at the resorts opening next year. Studio City is a being built by Melco-Crown Entertainment (MCE) as an entertainment and gaming resort.
The Australian billionaire James Packer, co-owner of MCE, also runs RatPac Entertainment. RatPac has partnered with Plan B Entertainment, owned by Pitt, to produce the big budget corporate commercial. Packer told The Independent he wants “to bring together Western and Eastern culture.”
The new resort is being built in Cotai, Macau and joins 46 other casinos on what is now the most profitable gaming location in the world. Revenue from the casinos reached £27.5 billion in 2013 and had been growing at approximately 20 percent per year until earlier this year. This despite the growth of mobile gaming apps such as Europa Casino.
According to the Wall Street Journal in June, China cracked down on corruption in Macau which has driven revenues down. Primarily aimed at Chinese consumption, the VIP junket trade from China has dropped by 14 to 18 percent. By expanding the advertising on a global scale, Packer and MCE may be attempting to increase foreign revenue in the city that sets across the Pearl River from Hong Kong, China’s second Special Administrative District, which has also seen shopping revenues drop due to the same crackdown.
"The ongoing anticorruption campaign is placing considerable focus on the illicit transfer of Chinese funds overseas. Macau is a significant factor in this," said Steve Vickers, formerly of the Royal Hong Kong Police Criminal Intelligence Bureau.
Filming has already begun on the film where De Niro and Pitt were both seen on the set in New York. The short film was scripted by Terrence Winter, creator and writer of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire and writer of the movie The Wolf of Wall Street.
