article imageNew record for Gangnam Style as YouTube counter crashes

By Tim Sandle     Dec 3, 2014 in Entertainment
Seoul - The video for Gangnam Style, on YouTube, has become the first video on the channel to be watched more than two billion times. The number of views was so great that the YouTube views counter crashed.
Time marches on, public taste in popular music doesn't necessarily change that much. Back in November 2012, Digital Journal announced that the track"Gangnam Style," a dance song by South Korean pop singer PSY, became YouTube's most-watched video of all time. A little while later, in December 2012, Digital Journal declared that the tub-thumping pop number had reached 1 billion views. This year, in May, the video was pushing the two billion mark.
Now comes the news that the song has surpassed the two billion mark by some distance. How many hits exactly is uncertain because the YouTube counter has stopped working. At 2,147,483,647 the counter shut down. In technical terms, Digital Spy reports, this was because the number of views exceeded a 32-bit integer.
Happily the technical wizards at YouTube fixed the counter and it is back in action, inexhaustibly counting the burgeoning number of views that the three year-old song receives. At the time of writing the count was at 2,152,681,105.
A spokesperson from YouTube issued a statement saying: YouTube said: "We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met Psy. "Gangnam Style" has been viewed so many times we have to upgrade!"
If you are one of the few people on the planet who has not seen the video, it is presented below.
The song falls within the rising genre called K-pop. Billboard states that the phrase "Gangnam Style" is a Korean word that refers to a lifestyle associated with the Gangnam District of Seoul.
