Wondering where those Netflix price hike dollars were spent? More content and better original programming, beginning with the first-ever late night talk show with one eccentric personality.
American comedian and actress Chelsea Handler signed on with Netflix for a new talk show to begin in early 2016, marking the streaming video company's first dip into late-night programming waters.
According to Mashable, the contract also includes a one-hour standup special on her recent "Uganda Be Kidding Me" tour, slated to air on Oct. 10.
Handler is also expected to film four "docu-comedy" specials, which will include first-hand accounts of Nascar, NBA drafts, politics, and even Silicon Valley, Mashable reports.
So far, the new talk show's format and details have not been made clear by either Netflix or Handler. One thing is certain though — Handler will remain unfiltered and opinionated, through and through.
"If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested," Handler said in a statement Thursday. "I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move."
By 2016, her comedy specials and docu-comedies will have aired, and Handler will hit the ground running with the talk show, which will focus on topical entertainment and Handler's "signature guest interviews," USA Today reports.
It is unclear yet how recurring the show will be through the streaming site, or which countries will have the luxury of tuning in to Handler.
However, Netflix is eager to work towards the prospect, wanting to launch what it calls "a new format" for late-night programming.
“The Internet has disrupted many of the conventions of traditional television," Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos told Deadline. "Together with Chelsea Handler, Netflix is looking forward to reimagining the late night talk show for the on-demand generation, starting with the late night part."
Chelsea Handler is an American comedian and actress, best known for her memoir, Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea, and her talk show, Chelsea Lately, on the E! network. Chelsea Lately will air its last episode on Aug. 26, following a seven-year run through the station.
