British actor Michelle Gomez is to join Peter Capaldi in “Doctor Who” when the series returns in August, the BBC has announced.
Gomez has been cast as a new Who-universe character: the intriguingly-sounding Gatekeeper of the Nethersphere.
Well known for appearing in The Wedding Video, Green Room, The Book Group and, most recently, Jack Whitehall’s BBC Three school-based sitcom, Bad Education, the 43-year-old previously played Jevvan in a Doctor Who 2007 audio drama: Valhalla, in which Sylvester McCoy played the Seventh Doctor.
Capaldi, meanwhile, is the thirteenth actor to portray the Doctor — a Time Lord from Gallifrey — although, officially, he’s known as the Twelfth Doctor.
Gomez — who, like Capaldi and Who showrunner Steven Moffat hails from Scotland — has previously made no secret of the fact that she would jump at the chance of playing the Doctor. However, she praised her fellow countryman’s success in being cast as the current Doctor. As reported by Doctor Who News, she said, “Well, of course Peter Capaldi is our next Doctor, which makes complete sense.”
Moffat, meanwhile, said of Gomez becoming the Gatekeeper of the Nethersphere, “She’s everything we need — brilliant, Scottish, and a tiny bit satanic.”

The latest batch of Doctor Who stories have been in production since late last year with the two-part season finale currently being filmed in and around Cardiff. Written by Moffat, the episodes are directed by Rachel Talalay.
Doctor Who Season 8 will premiere in the UK and US on Saturday, August 23. With a number of other countries set to do likewise. The Doctor is once again partnered with his companion, Clara, played by Jenna Coleman since 2012. Other regular characters will include Danny Pink (Samuel Anderson) and Courtney (Ellis George).
Guest stars already announced for the upcoming season include Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch), Foxes — the singer who was among one of the many acts appearing at this weekend’s Glastonbury music festival — Keeley Hawes (Line of Duty), Ben Miller (Death in Paradise), Hermione Norris (Spooks), Tom Riley and Frank Skinner (Room 101).
Joining Moffat on writing duties are Mark Gatiss (An Adventure in Space and Time), Peter Harness (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell), Jamie Mathieson (ALT) Gareth Roberts (The Sarah Jane Adventures) and Steve Thompson (Sherlock).
