Previously titled
How to Catch a Monster, the movie sees the former Doctor Who star joined by
Iain De Caestecker (
Filth), Christina Hendricks (
Mad Men) and Eva Mendes (
The Place Beyond the Pines).
Hendricks plays Billy, a single mother, whose teenage son, Bones (De Caestecker), discovers a secret path leading to an underwater town.
Lost River receives its premiere at Cannes, today (Tuesday, May 20). Other members of the cast include Ben Mendelsohn (
Axe Cop), Saoirse Ronan (
Hanna) and Barbara Steele (
8½).
From 2010 to 2013, Smith played the Eleventh Doctor in the BBC's long-running science-fiction drama series,
Doctor Who,
handing over the role to Peter Capaldi (
The Musketeers) in the 2013 Christmas special,
The Time of the Doctor.
Earlier this month, it was announced that the 34-year-old
would be joining Arnold Schwarzenegger in the new trilogy of
Terminator movies.
De Caestecker can currently be seen in
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Marvel TV series from Joss and Jed Whedon. He first came to prominence playing the lead, Paul, in the 2011 BBC Three TV series,
The Fades, created by Jack Thorne.
