Having moved on from "Doctor Who", Scottish actor Karen Gillan has now set her sights on playing a superhero — namely, Spider-Girl.
Gillan was being interviewed by SFX magazine about her horror film, Occulus, which is currently in British cinemas; and her upcoming part in Guardians of the Galaxy.
During the chat, the 26-year-old also spoke of a desire to play a superhero. "I want to play Spider-Girl," she said.
Spider-Girl hails from the Marvel Comics MC2 universe. Otherwise known as May “Mayday” Parker, she is the teenage daughter of Peter Parker (Spider-Man) and Mary Jane Watson; and first appeared in What If...?, Vol. 2, No. 105, published in February 1998).
Gillan played Amy Pond, a companion to the Doctor (Matt Smith), in Doctor Who and the online spin-off Pond Life, from 2010 to 2012. and returned to the science-fiction series on Christmas Day 2013, for The Time of The Doctor, which marked Smith's swansong in the show.
Spider-Man is currently played by fellow British actor Andrew Garfield, in The Amazing Spider-Man film franchise. Garfield, incidentally, played Frank, a one-off companion to the Doctor (David Tennant) in two 2007 episodes of Doctor Who .
As well as Occulus and Guardians of the Galaxy, Gillan is also the star of a new American TV comedy series, Selfie, a loosely based modern take on My Fair Lady that is set in the world of social media.
Selfie also stars FlashForward's John Cho and Homeland actor David Harewood, and is due to premiere in the US on ABC sometime during the 2014–15 season.
