Holiday dents movie box office

“Inside Out” took in $29.7 million while “Jurassic World” hauled in $29.24 million. On Sunday, “Jurassic World” had the edge but as the day and night played out, it switched. The main figures were lower and that is not a good sign.

EARLIER: Two hyped newcomers could not overcome the one-two punch from “Jurassic World” and “Inside Out” at the box office. It is close at the top.

“Terminator: Genisys” and “Magic Mike XXL” could not even wage a decent battle at the box office. With the holiday landing on a Saturday, it stopped any momentum either film might have had. After some pretty solid numbers from the previews on Tuesday from the “Terminator” reboot and the male strippers sequel, they fell apart.

But, “Terminator: Genisys” did crush “Magic Mike XXL,” but it didn’t start out that way. This weekend is a tale of two box office stories since the two newcomers opened wide on Wednesday.

With the top numbers being so close, they will have to be looked at again, so the winner may change which means the focus of this report will be vague. If the dinos hold, it will be the fourth time they claimed the top spot. If “Inside Out” pushes past it when the actual numbers come in, then it becomes a first-time champ. That would be a nice trick since it has finished a solid second two weeks in a row.

Weekend, domestically
1. “Jurassic World” – three-day, $30.9 million
2. “Inside Out” – three-day, $30.1 million
3. “Terminator: Genisys” – three-day, $28.7 million; five-day, $44.1 million
4. “Magic Mike XXL” – three-day,$12 million; five-day, $27.7 million

“Inside Out” is on the fast-track for Oscar glory in animation and there is some buzz about it landing a Best Picture nomination as well. Yes, that can happen.

While males dominated “Terminator: Genisys,” females scored a home run for “Magic Mike XXL.” But, the females stayed away on Saturday. Of course, on a holiday such as the Fourth of July, outdoor activities ruled the day and night. They proved too mighty of a challenge for theaters.

Both “Terminator: Genisys” and “Magic Mike XXL” fell short of expectations by around $10 million. Plus, the overall domestic numbers for a summer weekend were not all that impressive. One needs to add in the five-day to get impressive numbers, but that does not happen for “Magic Mike XXL.”

The Amy Winehouse documentary is doing well in limited release. “Amy” brought in $37,000 per screen average. Another noteworthy item is that “Ted 2” fell 67 percent in its second weekend. That proves one dose is enough for that character.
