New York - "She passed away peacefully at 1:17 PM surrounded by family and close friends," said her daughter and Fashion Police co- star Melissa Rivers in a written statement released to worldwide media this afternoon.
Just last Thursday Ms Rivers was receiving an as-yet-to-be-revealed minor surgery at the Yorkville Endoscopy Clinic when complications led to her hospitalization and a medically induced coma at Manhattan's Mount Sinai Hospital.
As a result of the late comedienne's's death, the aforementioned clinic is under an investigation from the New York State Department of Health.
Ms Rivers comedy was often compared to that of Phyillis Diller and their "angry wife" routines were often staples for such popular talk and entertainment programs as The Tonight Show and Ed Sullivan.
Both women were very powerful exponents for the women's liberation movement of the late 60s.
Before their entry into the public mindset, stand -up comedy had been particularly male dominanted; the occupation was strictly reserved for vaudeville variety shows, Catskills borsht-belt holiday camps and burlesque houses where the MC or host often introduced each entertainer with a couple of jokes.
