James Franco apologizes for flirting with teen girl on Instagram

By Scott Tuttle     Apr 4, 2014 in Entertainment
Actor James Franco apologized Friday after realizing that a girl he had recently tried to seduce via Instagram was, in fact, only 17 years old.
On April 1, Franco, 35, allegedly met young Lucy Clode on the street after a preview of his latest Broadway act Of Mice and Men. When the actor saw a video she'd posted of the exchange, he began an online correspondence with the teen.
According to recently released screenshots of the pair's chat sessions, Clode, a Scottish native, told Franco that the trip to New York was a gift for her 18th birthday.
"You're 18?" replied Franco before later asking "You’re single? Where’s your hotel? Should I rent a room?"
During the exchange, Clode asked Franco to send live pictures of himself proving that he really was who he claimed to be. Franco obliged her with a picture of himself waving at his webcam followed by the message “Yes or no? Tomorrow or Thursday?"
When the teen leaked his photo, it instantly went viral, and it wasn't long before Franco discovered that her birthday was not until May.
"I'm embarrassed, and I guess I'm just a model of how social media is tricky," said Franco on Live! With Kelly and Michael. "It's a way that people meet each other today, but what I've learned -- I guess because I'm new to it -- is you don't know who's on the other end. You get a feel for them, you don't know who you're talking to. I used bad judgment and I learned my lesson."
In response to a meme with Franco's picture and a caption that reads "Why are you thirsty for underage ones?" Franco tweeted on Wednesday, "I'M NOT! I HOPE PARENTS KEEP THEIR TEENS AWAY FROM ME. Thank you."
