Jackie Chan wrapping up latest Indo-Chinese film ‘Kung Fu Yoga’

The action-adventure film is helmed by Hong Kong filmmaker Stanley Tong, who has directed Chan’s earlier films such as Rumble in the Bronx. The story involves Chan as a Chinese archaeologist looking for the lost treasures of the Magadhan empire in India. Chan ropes in an Indian professor, played by heroine Disha Patani, who teaches him marital arts and yoga and assists him in his treasure hunt. Bollywood action star Sonu Sood is also involved in the movie, and both the Indian actors are involved in stunt sequences, only to be expected in a Jackie Chan-starrer.

The plot features time travel too, with the professor and the archaeologist travelling back 2500 years, to the reign of Bimbisara, well-known as among the first to write a treatise on the yogic path and finding joy. Each of them will also battle their own personal issues and skeletons in the closet. The plot shifts between the present and various time periods in the past, and also shows the growth of the Magadha empire through history. There are short sequences featuring Chandragupta Maurya, one of the first Indian rulers to build a pan-India empire. Also featured is his mentor Chanakya, famous for his quotes and aphorisms, and the books Arthashastra and Chanakya Niti.

Patani’s role was earlier slated to go to Bollywood leading lady Katrina Kaif. A source involved with the movie had claimed, “There are a lot of stunts in the film which is not surprising since it features Jackie Chan, a martial arts expert. What is interesting is that Katrina too will get to do many action scenes.” Kaif has earlier been involved in movies featuring action sequences. However, later developments saw Patani being preferred. Patani is a trained gymnast, and this might have worked in her favor.

Chan had taken up this collaborative project in May 2015, after the two nations had signed several pacts, among which was one to increase cooperation in film-making. Chan is also filming “The Foreigner” with Pierce Brosnan. His last release was Kung Fu Panda 3, in which he voiced the character of Monkey. He also has Skiptrace, Rush Hour 4 and The Karate Kid 2 lined up.
