"Insurgent" had a solid win with a hearty $54 million, but some thought it could reach $60 million. Meanwhile, after Friday,
expectations were looking lower than the eventual take. Overall, the worldwide takes sees the second in the series taking in $101 million.
The series is
based on Veronica Roth's
novel and there are still two left. So, the figure is not a head-scratcher and not in the same league as "The Hunger Games" and its films, ot even "Twilight." "Insurgent" starring Theo Eptstein, Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, Miles Teller and Ansel Elgort, is aimed at the young adult crowd.
With almost the same
figure as last year's opening weekend as "Divergent," it did not grab anyone else this time around. Last year's "Divergent" opened to $54.6 million, on its way to $150.9 million, domestically. Often these films do make up any possible losses and off numbers overseas.
"Insurgent" scored with young females and that was exactly what "Divergent" did the year before.
Weekend
1. "Insurgent" - $54 million
2. "Cinderella" - $34.4 million
3. "The Gunman" - $5 million
Last week's winner, "Cinderella," is easily in
second, as expected. The usual drop was right around 50 percent, and is at $34.4 million for its second weekend.
The box office did not get any help from Sean Penn's latest film. "The Gunman" did
indeed shoot blanks and finished in a distant third with a dismal $5 million. It seems the male audiences were AWOL this weekend. But, the males that did show up went to see "The Gunman" in a big way (91 percent), noted
The Wrap.
The Wrap also noted that the box office is off 10 percent from last year at this time. With spring break and Easter approaching, these
numbers could have easily been better, but they were not. That is the head-scratcher in which they will try to figure out.
