It will pass $1 billion with relative ease as well. The overseas box office is solid and that is the case lately for films. It is on track or outpacing “Avengers” is some categories. Where it will end up is still up for debate. It took four days to reach $200 million, domestically, while “Avengers” took three.
This weekend, Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara team up for a female buddy picture in “Hot Pursuit.”
In many ways, these tend to go the way of male buddy comedies. They either work as a comedy or make the audience wonder why the movie was made. With Adam Sandler and company, it seems more like a way to get friends together and have some fun, regardless of the outcome.
Weekend
1. “Hot Pursuit” – 3,003 theaters
2. “The D Train” – 1,009 theaters
4. “Five flights Up” – 87 theaters
5. “Saint Laurent” – 4 theaters
With Witherspoon and Vergara, they are no stranger to comedy. From “Legally Blonde” to “Modern Family,” there is a track record. With Witherspoon lately, though, it has been drama, plus an Oscar along the way for her portrayal of June Carter Cash.
This is not that and doesn’t have to be, but with females go? It looks like a bad buddy picture but it is Mother’s Day weekend. On Sunday, one may want to take mom, so is it “Avengers: Age of Ultron” or “Hot Pursuit”? With “Hot Pursuit,” it is also rated PG-13, so it is a gentle movie for the family.
Jack Black and his R-rated “The D Train” would be suited for Father’s Day, so the odd release of this one may show with the figures later. Or perhaps, the males who do not want to see another superhero movie would go.
Of note is the teaming of Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton in “Five Flights Up.” This PG-13 rated film may be what mom ordered up but will be hard to see since it is not in many theaters. But, it is a drama with plenty of dialogue and may be something more suited to her tastes, and his, for that matter.
In only four theaters comes the R-rated “Saint Laurent” starring as Gaspard Ulliel as Yves Saint Laurent. A look at the life of the fashion designer is highlighted.
In limited release comes a dramatic turn for Arnold Schwarzenegger. But, it is a zombie movie and it also stars Abigail Breslin. But, this weekend will once again belong to “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Even if it slips 50 percent that puts it around in solid ground with an impressive second weekend win.
