The embattled Canadian singer Justin Bieber continued his journey back to the penthouse of pop music over the weekend in Milan, Italy. The Biebs won five MTV European Music Awards and in doing so set a new record for the most EMAs.

Forever popular in Europe, Bieber won the EMA's Best Male Act trophy for the sixth consecutive time. The 21-year-old Biebs also won for Biggest Fans, Best North American Act, Best Look and Best Collaboration for his work on his song "Where Are U Now" with Skrillex and Diplo.
'It's been a long couple of years," Bieber said as he accepted one of his five awards. "I just feel it's awesome to be recognized for my music."
Later as he received his collaboration award Bieber said he "wanted to say Skrillex and Diplo, man, those guys are so talented and really helped me take my music to the next level so I just to say thank you to Skrillex and Diplo."
The musician and songwriter kept winning awards and kept having to make speeches. He was gracious throughout and never seemed to tire of thanking those close to him, and his fans.
"Once again, thank you to my mum and dad, my brother and sister, I miss you so much, I just want to give you a big old kiss and a hug.," he said. "I can never not thank everybody in this audience, and everybody around the world. I'm shaking a little bit because I'm just like, 'This is so awesome!'"
Bieber sets EMA record
British singer Ed Sheeran co-hosted the ceremony with actress and DJ Ruby Rose; Sheeran himself won awards for Best Live Act and for Best World Stage.
American singer, musician and songwriter Taylor Swift was nominated an astonishing nine times but, almost equally astonishing, won just once, winning Best Song for "Bad Blood."
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won Best Video for their Downtown promo. Other winners included Nicki Minaj, One Direction and Rihanna. Remember Duran Duran? They got the inaugural Video Visionary Award.
Bieber sang at the awards show, a strong performance of his song "What Do You Mean," which is number 3 on Billboard's Hot 100. He's now won 18 EMAs, breaking Eminem's previous record of 15.
