article imageHarry Potter: Teddy Lupin spin-off ‘could happen’

By Mathew Wace Peck     Aug 6, 2014 in Entertainment
Will Teddy Lupin ever make it from printed page to silver screen? Luke Newberry, who was once cast as him, thinks it "could happen," that there's definitely some potential in a spin-off from J.K. Rowling’s all-conquering "Harry Potter" film franchise.
In an interview with RadioTimes.com recently, the subject of Newberry’s appearance in the final part of the long-running Harry Potter film franchise came up.
Or rather, the subject of Newberry’s non-appearance in the final movie instalment of Harry Potter!
For the Potter uninitiated, long before Newberry won a legion of fans for his role as PDS sufferer Kieren Walker in Dominic Mitchell’s In the Flesh, the British actor filmed a scene for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
Anyone who can’t remember his performance, need not blame Newberry’s acting abilities or their own forgetfulness, however. In fact, if you do remember, you were either: (1) part of the Harry Potter crew; (2) Luke Newberry; or (3) mad.
Why? Because, unfortunately, the young actor’s efforts ended up on the cutting-room floor, and not in the film as released.
Asked by RadioTimes.com how he felt about being excised from the Potter universe, the 24-year-old said it was, “Gutting! It was my dream! But I was technically there, on set.”
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Newberry played Teddy Lupin — the lanky half-werewolf son of Remus Lupin (David Thewlis) and Nymphadora Tonks (Natalia Tena). Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is the lad’s godfather.
In the original scheme of things, Lupin was meant to appear in the “19 years later” epilogue to the film series but, as is often the way with these things, it wasn’t to be.
Newberry, however, suggests that, since his performance was filmed but not shown, “I could always appear,” and with the ever-increasing appetite for genre spin-offs and all the current talk of more Potter-based films to come, who would bet on Teddy Lupin: The Spin Off Show not happening down the line?

A bit of speculative fun or wishful thinking, perhaps, but as Newberry himself says, “That could happen.”
In the meantime, fans of the actor can look forward to seeing him next year in a number of television series. As well as a guest appearance on Suspects, Channel Five’s semi-improvised police-procedural drama series, it was revealed recently that Newberry would be starring in Channel 4’s Cucumber and starring in E4’s sister show, Banana, the new interlinked gay-themed drama series created by former Doctor Who supremo Russell T Davies.
Any word on a third season of the award-winning In the Flesh, however, has still not materialised, but fans of it and Newberry himself are keeping their fingers tightly crossed.
