article image'Guardians of the Galaxy' soars to an August opening record

By Tim O'Brien     Aug 3, 2014 in Entertainment
"Guardians of the Galaxy" rocketed to an August record as it beat expectations and shot down the competition to the tune of $94 million.
That is the second best opening of the year behind "Transformers 4" ($100 million) and just ahead of "Godzilla" ($93 million). When films beat expectations this year, they truly are doing that as "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Godzilla" did.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" beat estimates by over $20 million.
This was indeed a shot in the arm for the slumping box office, as noted in the last report. That report was not alone in that assessment as The Wrap firmly stated what a surprise the film has been.
But, with all the talk of the huge numbers for a few films, the overall box office is still down. But, make no mistake about it, "Guardians of the Galaxy" is a sweet surprise. Perhaps it will not help the overall numbers for the summer, but it did not bomb, and that would have been worse. And now it owns the August opening record.
The previous record-holder was "Bourne Ultimatum" with $69.2 million in August 2007.
It not only did not tank, it thrived and launched another Marvel franchise for sure. The characters connected and the music was the glue. Chris Pratt is a now a star while Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) etch themselves into the fabric of conversation. Zoe Saldana's Gamora as the strong female lead and Dave Bautista's Drax the Warrior, add punch to this charmer.
1. "Guardians of the Galaxy" - $94 million
2. "Lucy" - $18.3 million
3. "Get On Up" - $14 million
The other new wide release, "Get On Up" was not going to compete for the top spot simply because of theater count. The James Brown biopic starring Chadwick Boseman took in an estimated $14 million.
In second was last week's winner, "Lucy," with $18 million. That is quite a drop from the top to the next films.
The success for "Guardians of the Galaxy" is a good start for August as later on many minds turn away and head back to school and are otherwise elsewhere besides seeing a movie. This should help the upcoming weekend as it should stay strong and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" arrive.
