article image'Gone Girl' wins in heated box office race

By Tim O'Brien     Oct 12, 2014 in Entertainment
"Gone Girl" went on and won another tight box office race as it fended off "Dracula Untold." The numbers were not as close as last week's race, but it was still good for the box office.
"Gone Girl" took in $26.8 million while "Dracula Untold" grabbed $23.4 million. That was solid effort for "Dracula Untold" while "Gone Girl 'held on strong.
Last weekend it was "Gone Girl" and "Annabelle" in a neck and neck race. This weekend, "Annabelle" grabbed an additional $16 million, good for fourth. “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” grabbed $19.1 million for third. It was "The Judge" that disappointed this weekend as the star power of Robert Duvall and Robert Downey Jr. could only muster $13.4 million.
With only a 26 percent drop, "Gone Girl" held on to the adult audience, which often gets ignored in marketing campaigns as that family-friendly fare takes over. That is evident with "Alexander" as that was the film that some, who do not follow the tracking, all that closely, would have thought would do better. Or even "The Judge" because of the two actors named Robert.
Word-of-mouth and strong positive reactions helped "Gone Girl" stay solid.
Weekend
1. "Gone Girl" - $26.8 million
2. "Dracula Untold" - $23.4 million
3. "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" - $19.1 million
4. "Annabelle" - $16 million
5. "The Judge" - $13.3 million
"Alexander" did indeed score with the family crowd. Deadline reports the smaller releases enjoyed a fine weekend as well.
The Wrap noted that the audience for "Dracula Untold" was 57 percent male. It also played older, too. They noted that it 61 percent of the crowd was over the age of 25. It was not a story that should have remained untold, as it easily could have been There was an audience for it.
It looks like the older crowd won out this weekend.
