The TV series Trailer Park Boys, now on Netflix, will have to prepare for its 11th season without actor Lucy DeCoutere. Ms. DeCoutere resigned from the show in principal because one of its male actors is accused of domestic battery.
Trailer Park Boy arrested
A regular actor on the Trailer Park Boys, Mike Smith, was arrested by L.A police in Hollywood Friday morning and charged with misdemeanour domestic battery after an incident at the Roosevelt Hotel. Smith, who plays Bubbles on the show, was arguing with friend Georgia Ling when police were called.
Witnesses say the two argued over who Smith had texted and Smith pushed Ling against the wall of a bathroom that is by the hotel's pool. While TMZ reports witnesses heard Ling say "you're choking me," both Smith and Ling say nothing untoward happened.
Ling said that someone else had called police and that she had no reason to do so and "there was no real issue." She told the police Smith was not guilty of battery but they followed through with the arrest.
DeCoutere on Twitter
DeCoutere has said she spoke to both Smith and Ling about the incident and despite their insistence the affair was overblown, she said she resigned from the show in part because it had issued a statement supporting Smith and in part because of Smith's actions.
"If I find out that somebody is abusive," she wrote on her Twitter page. "I cut them out of my life. It’s very easy."
She stated her resignation is connected to having been allegedly assaulted by Jian Ghomeshi and to being one of three complainants in the recent trial against him. Ghomeshi was acquitted on all five counts against him in that trial but will face another accuser in June.
“I am not leaving the show lightly. I love so many people who work on the show," DeCoutere told the Toronto Star. "I just couldn’t continue to work on this show based on these allegations and how it was handled."
Smith: I am not guilty
A written statement from Ling appears to exonerate Smith. "Mike and I did indeed have a heavy argument but it saddens me the way things are being reported and the way it was handled by the police,” Ling wrote. “At no point did I feel I was in danger, otherwise I would’ve called the police myself, which I did not.
"The police were called by others not present in the room who mistakenly perceived the argument to be something other than what it was," she continued. "When the officers arrived I tried to assure them there was no real issue, but they proceeded to arrest Mike."
Smith, released on $20,000 bail and scheduled to appear in a L.A. court on April 29, wrote that he and Ling are friends and they "had a loud and heated dispute. That is all. At no time did I assault her. I am not guilty of the misdemeanour charged against me.”
DeCoutere, whose testimony in the Ghomeshi trial was criticized by the judge, told the Star that she has "learned a lot over the past 18 months regarding how intimate partner abuse happens." She added that the Ghomeshi trial has "impacted every part of my life."
