article imageFishermen's Conversations to Premiere at Raindance Festival

Hvar - Possibly the most beautiful film ever produced on Croatia's premier island of Hvar will premiere in London next month at the Raindance Festival.
Some three years in the making, the eagerly-awaited Fishermen's Conversations film set on the island of Hvar will premiere in London next month, according to an announcement on the film's official Facebook page on September 2, 2014.
The 68-minute film, written and directed by the talented young Chiara Bove Makiedo, is an extraordinary look into the soul of the island of Hvar, a tourist and fishing island which is currently wrestling with itself for its identity, as the traditional life of the island, such as the centuries-old fishing traditions, is pitched against the modern party tourism that is threatening to kill the things which make the island so special.
Dedicated to the fisherman grandfather of Makiedo, who was only three when he died in 1991, the film is described thus:
"Fishermen’s Conversations is a study of a Mediterranean island, a young woman’s ode to her Grandfather and a portrait of a group of men struggling to maintain their fishing livelihood in a rapidly changing landscape. Using minimum dialogue and narration, this partly fly-on-the-wall documentary laments the depredation of tourism in Croatia and the greed that invites it. At the same time, the film celebrates the conservation of a way of life that helps preserve the identity of the island.
"Through journeys with fishermen as they take to the seas to make their living, 'Fishermen's Conversations' encourages the viewer to agree that not all is lost if we can only allow time to stand still once in a while."
Fishermen's Conversations will premiere on October 3 in London at the Raindance Festival.
