For months fans received small tastes of things to come via
J.J. Abrams’ video messages encouraging them to participate in
Force for Change for UNICEF. But the moment so many have been waiting for has finally arrived. An 88-second glimpse of the upcoming
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally been released. And while it doesn’t reveal a lot, it does look awesome.
The teaser trailer for
Episode VII is being shown in
30 theatres across North America beginning today and will expand to world markets after the weekend. Even though it’s now also available online, there is some argument to be made for the big screen — namely the scene of the Millennium Falcon jumping into hyperspace.

So what do we see?
John Boyega pops up in the middle of the desert in a stormtrooper uniform looking confused.
Daisy Ridley looks a lot like Leia on a type of hover bike. A pilot that looks like
Oscar Isaac is flying an X-wing. A Sith in black robes wields a red T-shaped lightsaber. And then of course there’s the Millennium Falcon, X-wings and TIE fighters along with a cute miniature version of R2D2 and flashes of an invasion.

The video lives up to its title of teaser, only hinting at what fans can expect and creating more questions than answers. Perhaps Boyega, Ridley and Isaac will be the new Luke, Leia and Han. Of course the original trio of
Mark Hamill,
Carrie Fisher and
Harrison Ford are still returning with the addition of some other new faces, including
Lupita Nyong’o,
Adam Driver and
Andy Serkis.

Shooting just wrapped at the beginning of November, so there’s still a lot of work to be done before the finish line particularly in the special effects department. But if this is what they have so far, it can only get better from here.
