In case you missed it in its limited theatrical run, Elton John’s "The Million Dollar Piano" film is now out on DVD and Blu-ray. For its outstanding visuals and musicality, it is well worth adding to your video library.
The Million Dollar Piano show is Elton John’s most recent residency at the Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. It is a bombastic show, with a stage setting fit for a Roman god. For those who aren’t able to take the trip to see the performance live (or would like a remembrance of the occasion) a recently released video on both Blu-ray and DVD is now available.
Besides Elton, his band and the 18-song set (filled with hits and a few surprises), the other star of this show is the piano itself. It is a truly unique instrument. One that provides amazing imagery to coincide with Elton’s songs. It is, as we are told in the Making the Million Dollar Piano documentary (provided as bonus material on both the DVD and Blu-ray) actually worth somewhat more than that million dollar figure. To truly appreciate the concert film, that documentary is required viewing.
Interviews with the late Mark Fisher (who came up with the concept of the show of Elton as the Sun King, a reference to Louis XIV of France) and Patrick Woodroffe, show director/lighting designer, give a fascinating look at the show from planning stages to performance. There is also a look at how the piano was created by Yamaha, with video of the actual construction, and an interview with the instrument’s designer Akie Hinokio. Hinokio is shown almost in tears when she is introduced to Elton John at the opening of The Million Dollar Piano residency in September 2011. It is a poignant moment: a fan giving back to a favorite artist in such a way is the stuff dreams are made of.
Live In Kiev is the other bonus feature on the video and has some fine footage from a recent outdoor concert in Russia. Only four songs are featured, but the performance is a good one and a full-length video of this show would certainly be welcome.
