Today, nine years to the day after Elton John and David Furnish entered into a civil partnership, they were married in England. The superstar pop artist from the U.K. and the filmmaker from Toronto, Canada are now husband and husband.

Same-sex marriages became legal in England and Wales in March of this year and John, 67, and Furnish, 52, decided then that simply remaining in a civil partnership wasn't good enough.
Together since 1993, they hosted their formal wedding on their Old Windsor estate near London, posting pictures throughout on Instagram, using the hashtag "sharethelove." Their were friends and family present at the wedding along with a number of celebrities, such as Ed Sheeran and Elizabeth Hurley, and many from David and Victoria Beckham's family.
Their sons, Zachary, 3, and Elijah, a month shy of his second birthday, born of the same surrogate mother, also attended.
Marriage over civil partnerships
For John it is his second marriage, having been married to a woman, Renate Blauel, a German sound engineer, from 1984 to 1988. He was also engaged in the 1960s to his first lover Linda Woodrow, but they never married. John has also spoken of a gay lover he had who killed himself, unable to reconcile his homosexuality and Christian upbringing.
John and Furnish had an even larger ceremony when they entered into the civil partnership in 2005. Sir Elton, knighted in 1998 for his charity work, was once a believer in civil partnerships for gays but has since become a supporter of same-sex marriage. He says the difference is very big indeed.
"There is a world of difference between calling someone your 'partner' and calling them your 'husband'," John has said. "'Partner' is a word that should be preserved for people you play tennis with, or work alongside in business. It doesn't come close to describing the love that I have for David, and he for me. In contrast, 'husband' does."
He now both has a husband, and is one.
