One of the most iconic sci-fi monsters, the Cybermen, are to return to "Doctor Who" in this year's season finale, it has emerged.
The metal creations have been spotted on the streets of the Welsh capital, Cardiff, today, in scenes being filmed by Peter Capaldi, who plays the current incarnation of the Time Lord known only as the Doctor.
Capaldi was joined by Michelle Gomez, who is to join the 51-year-old show this year as a brand-new character — the intriguingly named Gatekeeper of the Nethersphere.
Shoppers in the centre of Cardiff came face to face with the Cybermen earlier today and, with news quickly spreading, the BBC's official Doctor Who Twitter feed posted a picture of Capaldi, Gomez and the metal giants (see above left).
The Cybermen made their Doctor Who debut almost 48 years ago — in the 1966 serial The Tenth Planet, which saw the First Doctor (William Hartnell) regenerate into the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton).

After the Daleks, the Cybermen are the monsters most identified with Doctor Who, which first aired in the UK in 1963.
The most recent appearance of the Cybermen was in last year's Doctor Who Christmas special, The Time of the Doctor. Marking the show's 800th full-length TV outing, the special was also the last-ever episode to feature Matt Smith as the Doctor, a role he'd held since 2010.
As well as regular Cybermen, The Time of the Doctor featured the Cyber head, Handles, a new companion of the Doctor, played by Kayvan Novak (Syriana); as well as, for the first time ever, the Wooden Cyberman.
Doctor Who Season 8 will premiere, with the feature-length Deep Breath, in the UK and US on Saturday, August 23. With a number of other countries set to do likewise. The Doctor is once again partnered with his companion, Clara, played by Jenna Coleman since 2012. Other regular characters will include Danny Pink (Samuel Anderson) and Courtney (Ellis George).
The as-yet-untitled two-part season finale is written by Who showrunner Steven Moffat and directed by Rachel Talalay (Kyle XY).
