article imageChris Rock on race: Blacks the same, but whites are getting nicer

By Marcus Hondro     Dec 2, 2014 in Entertainment
In an interview with Vulture mag, comedian Chris Rock arguably nails what is a big thorn in the side of black people in the U.S. - white people. It's not blacks getting better, always been good, his argument goes, it's white people doing the improving
"So, to say Obama is progress is saying that he’s the first black person that is qualified to be president. That’s not black progress," Rock said. "That’s white progress. There’s been black people qualified to be president for hundreds of years."
Mr. Rock's assertion is backed up by numbers. Stats show that in the 1950s a Barack Obama becoming president of America would have been as likely The Fonz shaving his head. As the Washington Post pointed out in a piece by Christopher Ingram, in a Gallup poll in 1958 only 38 percent of Americans even said they would vote for a black candidate.
Two years ago that number had climbed up to 96 percent.
Rock, who has made race and black stereotypes a mainstay of his comedy, is the parent of two daughters and he included them in his Vulture talk, noting they, too, are benefiting form the improvement of white folks.
"The question is, you know, my kids are smart, educated, beautiful, polite children," he said. "There have been smart, educated, beautiful, polite black children for hundreds of years. The advantage that my children have is that my children are encountering the nicest white people that America has ever produced"
The 49-year-old worked for years on the comedy circuit and then got a gig as a cast member on 'Saturday Night Live' in the 90s. From there he went on to a successful career in films (Head of State, Grown Ups and Top Five) and doing HBO specials. He's a writer, director and producer, too. And obviously an insightful guy.
"So let’s hope America keeps producing nicer white people," Rock said.
