article imageCharlize Theron in talks to play villain in 'Fast 8'

By Tim Adams     Feb 9, 2016 in Entertainment
Charlize Theron is rumored to be in talks to join the 'Fast and Furious' franchise as its first primary female villain in 'Fast 8.'
The Fast and Furious franchise has come a long way since its birth. What once started as an ode to Point Break turned into multiple action heist films. Last week Vin Diesel announced on Instagram that there will be three more installments to Fast and Furious, which will be its eighth, ninth, and tenth.
This will take the total number of films to 10 in the span of 20 years. They will premiere in 2017, 2019, and 2021.
"The studio has asked me to release some very big Fast news," the actor wrote in a series of Instagram posts. "As most of you know I like to stay in character (for an unrelated film currently shooting) for the most part when given the opportunity to make magic. However, it was Toretto Tuesday and the studio gave me big news to share... So I will share it."
The main players returned in Fast and Furious in 2009 to revitalize the series. But it wasn't until Fast Five and the inclusion of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson that audiences took to the box office in record numbers. Now Fast 8 could be set to bring in another high-profile star in the form of Charlize Theron.
Deadline reports director F. Gary Gray and screenwriter Chris Morgan are eyeing Theron to fill the movie's villain role. Their thinking must be that the franchise gained popularity by adding "The Rock", so its possible it can happen again with Theron. Also, Theron helped lead Mad Max: Fury Road to critical success last year.
Universal has not confirmed any casting at the time of this report.
