Cape Town hosts International Animation Festival

Workshops will cover topics on character animation, script writing and producing. The festival, which was earlier called Kunjanimation, also features the African premiere of the much-loved Stick Man animated film. The film premiered in the UK on Christmas 2015, and drew 9.27 million viewers and a 41 percent share of the TV audience, making it the fourth most popular program on the day.

The film showcase, at The River Club, also includes Cartoon Saloon’s Song of the Sea, by two-time Oscar nominee director Tomm Moore, and The Boy and the World, directed by Alê Abreu, which was nominated for an Oscar. Also on display are Sita Sings the Blues, based on the story of the Ramayana, the Indian epic, and the French animation Adama, about a boy searching for his brother. Animations from Brazil, Ireland and Australia are also on offer.

The South African film industry has grown several-fold in the last two decades since the end of Apartheid. Recent movies, such as Invictus, starring Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela, not only featured a South African topic, but also included several South Africans in cast and crew. However, animation is one area where South African presence has lagged until the last few years. The animation festival is an initiative of Animation South Africa, and has grown nearly thrice over since its inception, an indication of the growing presence of South Africans in the global animation industry.

Nectarious Films producer Christine Ponzavera who works on project development, explained how South Africans are making their presence felt in the global market. “You have to be authentic and trust your personal take on a given project. But, we are in a business as well so we have be aware of the market,” she explained. “You have to understand who will bring the product to the market so you need to keep an eye on what is being made, who is airing what, who is distributing what and who the artists are.”
