article imageBlu-ray/DVD Essentials: Barrymore on 'Blended' Special

By Earl Dittman     Aug 28, 2014 in Entertainment
Married, with children, Drew Barrymore, the former child star ('E.T.') and sexy crime-fighting ('Charlie's Angels') actress, paired-up, earlier this year, with her rom-com buddy Adam Sandler for another laugh-packed screen outing in 'Blended.'
The big screen comedy Blended (now on Blu-ray/DVD) marks the third pairing of film stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, following their hilarious couplings in 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer. Blended – directed by Frank Coraci, who previously collaborated with Sandler and Barrymore on The Wedding Singer, and also directed Sandler in the hit comedies The Waterboy and Click – is the crazy yet poignant tale of divorced, single parents Lauren (Barrymore) and Jim (Sandler), who, after a disastrous blind date to Hooters, agree on only one thing – that they never want to see each other again. But when they each sign up separately for a fabulous family vacation with their kids, they are all stuck sharing a suite at a luxurious African safari resort for a week. Although Lauren and Jim vow they loath each other, their time together in the wild has a strange, life-changing effect on the pair.
The 39-year-old Barrymore – who is now married and the mother of two adorable toddlers – has taken some time away from acting for a few years while she began a new family with hubby Will Kopelman. So, when her old pal Adam Sandler approached her to join him in Blended, she was more than thrilled. Barrymore explains that their exciting onscreen chemistry and off-screen friendship made her choice to do the romantic comedy a no-brainer.
"I would sum it up with one word – respect," she says of her relationship with Sandler . "If you respect somebody, you can make it in love and in films. You can make it in times that are happy and sad. It all stems from respect."
Her decision to return from her self-imposed hiatus was made even easier after Drew took one look at the Blended screenplay – written by Ivan Menchell & Clare Sera. In addition to tickling her funny bone, it touched the new mom in Barrymore. "The script was so funny and we all need to laugh," she insists. "It also had heart and that got me because I love to laugh and cry. It’s a movie about two people who just want to be good parents. It’s all about what will make their kids happy."
Produced by Mike Karz, Adam Sandler and Jack Giarraputo, Blended also stars Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaids) as Lauren’s best friend, Jen, and Joel McHale (Community) as her unreliable ex-husband, Mark. Kevin Nealon (Weeds) and Jessica Lowe (RobotDown) star as Eddy and Ginger, an overly romantic couple who are also vacationing at the resort, and Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) stars as the resort’s singing host. Dan Patrick (ESPN SportsCenter) appears as Jim’s boss, Dick and Shaquille O’Neal as his coworker, Doug. Playing Jim’s three daughters are Bella Thorne (Shake it Up), Emma Fuhrmann and Alyvia Alyn Lind. Kyle Red Silverstein and Braxton Beckham appear as Lauren’s two sons.
