article image'Birdman' soars with six Independent Spirit Awards nods

By Tim O'Brien     Nov 25, 2014 in Entertainment
Los Angeles - The 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards today (Nov. 25) announced the nominations for its best of the year. "Birdman" leads the way with six nominations.
Its star, Michael Keaton and Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the director, also scored nominations. Following "Birdman" with five nominations each were "Boyhood," "Selma" and "Nightcrawler."
"Birdman" follows an actor's journey on his way back from an earlier career as a superhero. The film showcases Keaton and has earned him a great deal of praise along the way. It will surely launch him into Oscar territory. Likewise, "Boyhood" has earned accolades since its release and how it was filmed will matter when the votes are cast. It was filmed over a 12-year period and that alone cannot be overlooked.
Rosario Dawson and Diego Luna announced the nominations today in Los Angeles. “We are so thrilled that Rosario Dawson and Diego Luna are teaming up once more to join Film Independent in announcing this year’s Spirit Award nominees,” said Josh Welsh, President of Film Independent. “This year marks our 30th anniversary and we look forward to celebrating with the independent film community on the beach on Feb. 21.”
By the way, the full title for "Birdman" is "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)." Two special awards include the Robert Altman Award for "Inherent Vice" and the Special Distinction Award goes to "Foxcatcher."
