Anticipation builds in ‘House of Cards’ season 3 trailer (video)

It’s no coincidence Netflix released the trailer for season three of its award-winning original series House of Cards right after Kevin Spacey accepted his Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Drama at last night’s ceremony.

The show is based on a British series of the same name, but has proven to be far more cutthroat than its predecessor. In the first season, U.S. Congressman Francis Underwood (Spacey) declares his ambitions to run the whole country. Of course there are number of people standing between him and the president’s chair, but that’s just details. By the season finale, he’s accepted the position of Vice President. In season two, the lows to which he and his wife, Claire (Robin Wright), are willing to sink to achieve their goals reaches new and surprising depths. But their mutual conniving also proves effective as the newest season centres on the couple’s fresh White House appointments as U.S. President and First Lady. When Spacey reached the stage to accept his award, his first words were, “This is just the beginning of my revenge,” suggesting the Commander-in-Chief will have more than just international relations on the agenda.

While the trailer is primarily composed of a montage of foreboding images — a military funeral, a foreign leader refusing Frank’s hand during a photo op, a protest and a string of scenes in which Frank and/or Claire appear distressed — it indicates mounting pressures and stakes as their plans come to fruition and perhaps their past returns to haunt them. There’s also a visible rift developing between the couple. Claire closes the intense preview by saying, “We’re murderers, Francis.” To which he responds very deliberately, “We’re survivors.”

The forcefulness of the 45-second video is boosted by the use of A Perfect Circle’s base-heavy “Counting Bodies like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums” in the background. The song creates the perfect mood for the trailer, matching Frank’s unrelenting strength and determination.

Spacey commented on the new season during a backstage interview with Barkley after his win: “I can tell you exclusively that there will be scenes and dialogue, movement, surprises, some of it taking place in the White House, some of it taking place elsewhere and there will be shocks and surprise, pulls and turns, yes, you got it from me here.” That clarifies everything…

Seasons one and two of House of Cards are now streaming, and all 13 episodes of season three will be available on Netflix on Feb. 27.
