article imageAcorn TV offers an eclectic mix of British television programming

With a unique roster of programming, and subscriber numbers steadily growing, Acorn TV is a force to be reckoned with in the world of streaming services.
Streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu Plus have changed the way we watch TV. For many viewers, it is easier and less expensive to subscribe to these services than pay a cable or satellite company for access to programming. And while Netflix and company offer a great wealth of excellent programs, there is another streaming service that offers programming not previously touched upon by the big three: British television.
While it is true that a smattering of British TV is offered by these sites, none has plundered the treasures as deeply or with as much expertise as Acorn TV. Launched in 20ll, Acorn TV is the first streaming site to offer such an impressive array of British television programming in the United States and Canada. They have been dubbed the “chief curators of the best Brit TV” by Time magazine, and hold exclusive North American rights to the most critically acclaimed British programs. These are available for streaming via the Acorn TV service or as DVDs via mail order through their website.
The titles available for streaming range from drama to comedy, mysteries to documentaries. Many of these programs, such as Agatha Christie’s Poirot and Brideshead Revisited, will be familiar. Others, like the wonderful comedy/drama William and Mary (starring Martin Clunes and Julie Graham), and the comedy Fresh Fields (starring Anton Rodgers and Julia McKenzie), will be welcome discoveries. Even if you fancy yourself an aficionado of British television, you will be impressed by the wealth of titles Acorn TV offers, and the fact that the majority have never before been available outside the U.K.
If you have Roku TV, you can stream directly from the Acorn TV app. I found streaming from my iPad through my Apple TV provided an excellent viewing experience, as well. You can also access programming through your IOS device or computer. The cost for the service is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year. More information can be found on the AcornTV site.
