article imageA five star 'Hollywood-style' funeral for 81-year-old Joan Rivers

By Nancy Houser     Sep 7, 2014 in Entertainment
New York - Today was the funeral of Joan Rivers, a red-carpet fashion laureate, comic icon, and outspoken superstar. She was buried in the same "Hollywood-style" manner she planned, based on the life she had lived.
The funeral was held at the monumental Temple Emanu-El in New York, a beautiful and historical place where Rivers had been a member. Inside, white gardenias lined the front of the synagogue as an organist played classical music.
The funeral had been fully described in Joan's book, "I Hate Everyone... Starting With Me." A woman who knew what she wanted, very seldom did she not acquire it.

Instead of a rabbi talking, Rivers had asked for "Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents" and "a wind machine so that even in the casket my hair is blowing just like Beyonce's." Hilarious as it was, one can almost hear Joan laughing and describing it.
The sentence above gives credit from Rivers to the extreme intelligence of Meryl Streep, but Joan herself was just as smart but in an entirely different way. In her book, "Bouncing Back: I've Survived Everything .... ," she said,
There are many self-help books by Ph.D.s, but I hold a different degree: an I.B.T.I.A. --- I've Been Through It All. This degree comes not on parchment but gauze, and entitles me to tell you that there is a way to get through any misfortune.
Joan Rivers would have been ecstatic on how the funeral turned out, with the number of celebrities who attended, actor Hugh Jackman singing, and Howard Stern delivering the eulogy --- all in the typical "Joan Rivers" style.
Before the funeral, hundreds upon hundreds of mourners circled the city block, across from the famous Central Park. A private funeral service was held inside the synagogue, fans and spectators remained outside while invited guests waited for their names to be checked off a list before they were allowed to enter.
According to the New York Times, "For the comedian Joan Rivers, no occasion was off-limits, not even her own funeral." However, New York CBS says it best ..."a champion of theater for decades ... [her funeral] brought together the worlds of Hollywood, theater, fashion and media."
Throughout Joan's life she was asked the question, "Is there anything you will not talk about?" And always she would respond with, "No, because if you can talk about it ... you can deal with it." A strong woman, in "Enter Talking, Joan Rivers," she talked about her mother.
Whenever my mother thought I was in the right, she would go to the school with both six-guns strapped to her waist and raise hell.
The strong and independent streak of uniqueness that Joan was born with obviously came from her mother. And boy, would she have been proud at what Rivers did for the independence of women throughout the world ! After all, Joan was the first to admit she hated to cook and clean house; what old-fashioned woman would admit that before the Joan Rivers era?
