Review: ‘Star Wars — Princess Leia #3’ is political awakening for Leia

Marvel’s Star Wars: Princess Leia #3 was released on Wednesday, April 29th. You can buy a print or digital copy for $4.

Reuniting the citizens of Alderaan will not be an easy task for the titular Princess Leia. They have boarded a new ship, Lord Junn, but it still paints a target on Leia’s back. One of the Alderaanians is communicating with her sister, Tula, an officer of the Galactic Empire.

Tace had led the Empire to Leia’s location, but she didn’t mean to.

Commander Dreed compliments Tula on obedience, but gives criticism for the act of disloyalty towards her sister. Rhetorically asking, why the f—k does Dreed even care about loyalty? Tula has proved she is willing to follow orders.

Dreed shouldn’t criticize Tula because she got Leia’s destination, Sullust.

Leia arrives to the Alderaanian enclave on Sullust, where the Preserver has dispatched a squad to intercept her. Their Sullustan guide explains that the Alderaanian refugees have gone insane after their planet exploded.

Leia is empathetic, but Evaan doesn’t feel the same way.

They are greeted by the Alderaanians with their guns drawn, which leads to a battle with Leia’s group as the victor. I laughed when Leia criticized the soldiers for being pathetic in combat before saying that she will follow as their princess.

The Alderaanian refugees aren’t too thrilled to see Princess Leia, which surprises her. It leads to a confrontation with the Preserver, Jora Astane. Leia demands Jora answer to her, but the latter simply dismisses it.

Leia pleads her case, but Astane and the others are on guard because of the Empire. Evaan does a poor job of contributing to the conversation as she tells them to trust Leia because she’s the princess. I think Leia needs to school Evaan on diplomacy because she sucks at it.

Jora gives Leia & Evaan the nickel ‘n dime tour and introduces the Eyewell, the heart of the enclave’s center of operation. Leia is surprised and appalled to see Alderaanians participate in smuggling and other illegal operations, where Jora gives her a political awakening.

It is apparent that Evaan doesn’t like Jora because it seems that Alderaanian culture is being raped, but the arguing doesn’t last long when they are alerted of an incoming Imperial force. This agitates Jora’s suspicion that Leia is working with the Imperial Galactic Empire.

Leia’s group is forced to flee as Imperial Storm Troopers raid the facility, where a fierce shootout ensures. I’m glad to see that R2-D2 has kept his cool the entire time. I think Leia and Evaan would have been f—ked if R2 didn’t accompany them.

R2’s strategy allows the tide to return in the Alderaanian’s favor.

Jora apologizes for suspecting Leia and demands everyone to acknowledge her as Alderaan’s leader, which has a slightly happy ending. There is still the fact that there is a “traitor” on board. I know it’s going to be hard to suspect an Alderaanian, but harder to look at one working as an Imperial Officer.

What did I think of Star Wars: Princess Leia #3?

This issue was excellent to read because it revealed a side to Alderaanians that neither Leia nor Evaan have expected to even see. Princess Leia gets a rude awakening on how the Alderaanians have lived after being scattered through the galaxy.

The refugees on Sullust are a prime example.

Evaan’s tendency to get brash and impulsive can prove to be dangerous to Leia’s hope of reuniting every surviving Alderaanian. I was surprised to see Leia act as the empathetic mediator in this situation, where I think Evaan’s noble upbringing played a role in having a “narrow-minded” perspective towards Jora and other enclave refugees.

I can’t criticize Evaan too much because she’s awesome.

Evaan is a cross between Luke Skywalker and Han Solo in terms of personality. It’s like dealing with a female Han Solo when it comes to diplomacy because the man lacks in that department. I will stress that Han Solo is also a bad@$$.

Tace and Tula’s relationship remains the ultimate twist in the story.

The former is technically a traitor, but she had no idea that Tula was working for the enemy. Neither Leia nor Evaan should condemn Tace when they eventually learn the truth. If Leia and Evaan are that shocked to see fellow Alderaanians lead a series of illegal operations, then they have yet to see the worst.

As for Dreed, he’s a d—k for giving Tula a backhanded compliment. The guy needs to make up his mind. Rhetorically asking, does Commander Dreed want Tula to be obedient to the Empire or remain loyal to her sister?

Tula delivered without being nervous or anxious about it, which says a lot because Dreed implied that he was unnerved by it. Commander Dreed, do you want Tula to feel guilty for giving you Princess Leia’s location?!

He’s lucky that Darth Vader wasn’t around to listen.

I give Star Wars: Princess Leia #5 an A+.
