Review: ‘Ms. Marvel #16’ sucker punches Kamala Khan with the Secret Wars

Ms. Marvel #16 was released recently on Wednesday, where Kamala Khan aka the titular Ms. Marvel is trying to move on after Kamran’s blatant act of betrayal. It’s safe to say that the romance is officially over since Kamran revealed his true colors and sided with a malevolent group of new Inhumans bound to take over Jersey City.

Compared to the previous incarnations of Ms. Marvel, Kamala is incredibly funny.

Over three weeks have passed since Kamala had to escape from New Attilian since it was taken over by the group that Kamran associated himself with. I found it funny that Kamala used the hotdog vendor as a free therapist, where she reveals her gluttonous side by gorging a couple of hotdogs.

But indigestion gets to Kamala.

The ordeal with Kamran doesn’t remotely compare to the s—t that Kamala has seen.

Kamala struggles to move on, but had to deal with the Incursion as the 616-Universe and the 1610-Universe are headed on a collision course with each other. I’m surprised that this is the point in the new Ms. Marvel series that ties directly into the “Secret Wars” arc that will reboot the mainstream universe.

Everyone is dealing with the incoming Incursion in their own way.

Magneto and Polaris are currently holding their own in San Francisco, where the former ultimately realized the error of his ways.

Wolverines ended as Mystique was willing to let Earth be destroyed after being denied what she wanted, Destiny’s resurrection.

The Incursion does happen as Deadpool met his end in Deadpool #45.

It’s chaos and pandemonium through the streets of Jersey City as Ms. Marvel desperately tries to protect people, but it’s not easy for her.

Even when Earth is about to be destroyed, Kamala still has to deal with Kamran.

Kamran and his group are still bent on trying to rule Jersey City, which is something they will never accomplish. I find it funny, but pathetic, that Kamran’s continuing with his plan even when Deadpool #45 confirmed the Incursion.

S—t gets real as Kamran has taken Aamir, Kamala’s older brother, to turn him into an Inhuman.

Dealing with the drama of Kamran is the last thing Kamala needs right now, but being a superheroine is not an easy job.

Kamala feels all alone, but Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel (the original Ms. Marvel) arrives to provide the needed help.

What did I think of Ms. Marvel #16?

I liked the story, but I have a lot of problems with it.

Rhetorically asking, what’s the point of introducing a new Ms. Marvel when Marvel Comics is planning to reboot the mainstream universe?

Marvel Comics could have introduced Kamala Khan earlier and developed her further, but that’s not going to happen because of the Incursion via the “Secret Wars.” I’m concerned on what’s going to happen to Kamala’s development after the Incursion.

Bluntly put, it’s way too early to connect Ms. Marvel to the Incursion because it doesn’t give the current story arc a chance to seriously develop.

I give Ms. Marvel #16 a B+.

I would have given this issue an A-grade, but I felt that the Incursion was introduced too early in Ms. Marvel’s storyline.
