An extraordinary Russian pianist wins Tchaikovsky competition

The competition is named after great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and is held every four years. The former winners include famous American pianist Van Cliburn who won the top award at the height of the Cold War.

After a long deliberation, the international jury picked finalists in four categories: piano, cello, violin and voice. Among the pianists, Dmitry Masleev, the 27-year-old Russian, won first prize and a gold medal, and $30,000. And it’s worth mentioning that Dmitry Masleev selected a Steinway & Sons Model D piano, as the instrument of choice for the final round of judging to ensure the best sound quality.
