Actress Lella Satie discusses transforming into the character of Marilyn Monroe in the new Off-Broadway production "Jackie & Marilyn."
Acclaimed director Sanja Bestic who previously directed "Tesla" served as its director and it was written by Sheri Graubert. The play runs from April 18 until May 3 at The Lion Theatre in New York City.
The play "Jackie & Marilyn" is about three historic characters and their inner lives and relationships, behind closed doors. It is a fictional imagining of what might have gone on behind closed doors of the most famous love triangle of all-time, if it ever happened. "It is above all a story about passion, love, pain and betrayal," Satie said.
The actress has trained under veteran acting coach Susan Batson. "Susan is a master acting coach and it is my privilege and honor to train with her. Susan lives and breathes the art of acting. She encourages the artist to continuously expand and challenge oneself, 'Always in the art' and in 'Truth.' She is a living legend and I am forever grateful to her for her tutelage and guidance," she said.
On working with Bestic as director, Satie stated, "Sanja Bestic is a passionate and creative director. I admire her determination to see her dreams become reality. Her clear vision of how she sees the play still gives room for the actor to explore and express their own vision of the character. Sanja is a force to be reckoned with."
Satie did her homework in an effort to get into the character of Marilyn Monroe. "I watched Marilyn Monroe films, documentaries and read her biographies. I had many conversations with the writer Sheri Grubert and director Sanja Bestic. There are still, to this day conflicting stories and conspiracies about her life and mainly her love affair with President Kennedy. Sheri and Sanja had to take a perspective and agree on which of these accounts we will base the play on and what we think possibly happened between these two people. I strived to reach her humanity and understand who she was underneath the public persona that she created," she explained.
She concluded, "I would like the audience to engage in questions and provoking thoughts. Perhaps a different perspective. The play is about historic people, however this kind of love, passion and pain can happen to anyone. I believe it is not our job to judge but to understand and have compassion. To understand the self and the others."
